['njuːjɔːk 'stɔk ɪks'tʃeɪndʒ], Abkürzung NYSE [enwaɪes'iː], zentrale Wertpapierbörse der USA und weltweit größte Börse (auch »Big Board« genannt). Häufig wird der Sitz an der Wall Street als Synonym für die NYSE verwendet. Ihre Entstehung geht auf formlose Treffen von Wertpapierhändlern gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts zurück. 1792 gründeten 24 von ihnen eine Gesellschaft (Buttonwood Tree Agreement), die in rasch wachsendem Umfang und nach immer strengeren Regeln den Börsenhandel organisierte. 1863 erhielt sie ihren heutigen Namen. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg stieg die NYSE zur weltweit wichtigsten Börse auf. Im Anschluss an die Weltwirtschaftskrise und den Zusammenbruch des Wertpapierhandels 1929 wurde 1934 der Handel erstmals einer staatlichen Aufsicht durch die Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) unterstellt. Träger der NYSE ist ein privatrechtlicher Verein, dem v. a. die Broker (Makler) und Dealer (Börsenhändler) angehören.
 
Die Kundenaufträge werden grundsätzlich im Börsensaal (Börsenzeit: 15.30-22.00 Uhr MEZ) nach dem Auktionsprinzip abgewickelt. Für kleine oder limitierte Aufträge wird einer der Specialists unter den Börsenmitgliedern eingeschaltet, die verpflichtet sind, für jeweils bestimmte Papiere für einen geregelten Markt zu sorgen, wenn erforderlich durch Selbsteintritt. Die Specialists sind über das Intermarket Trading System (ITS) mit den Specialists an anderen Börsen verbunden, was bei an mehreren Börsen notierten Papieren den für Kunden jeweils günstigsten Abschluss ermöglicht. Der älteste und bekannteste Aktienindex der NYSE ist der Dow-Jones-Index.
 
Neben der NYSE bestehen in New York die American Stock Exchange (AMEX) und die NASDAQ, wobei die NYSE in der Rangfolge unumstritten an erster Stelle steht, gefolgt von der NASDAQ und der drittplatzierten AMEX. Weitere wichtige Börsen in New York sind die Commodity Exchange (COMEX) v. a. für Edelmetalle, die New York Cotton Exchange (NYCE), die New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) für den Handel mit Futures (v. a. auf Metalle, Energie- und Agrarprodukte) und die New York Futures Exchange (NYFE) für den Aktienindexhandel.
